Student speaking on stage at the National Tournament
Extemporaneous Speaking (Extemp) involves delivering a speech on current events with limited preparation time. There are two types: United States and International. A student’s understanding of important political, economic, and cultural issues is assessed along with critical thinking and analytical skills. Students draw a topic, phrased as a question, and have 30 minutes to prepare. When prep time is up, the student reports to the competition room to deliver a 7 minute speech.
This course will take coaches new to PF or new to debate in general through the ins and outs of the event. Upon completion of the course, coaches will be able to:
  • Follow an Extemp speech and identify the different parts of the speech, their purpose, and the strategy at play.
  • Explain key terms and how they fit in to the structure of the event.
  • Implement strategies for success in coaching both in the classroom and at tournaments.
  • Build on their initial understanding with additional resources to learn more about coaching Extemp.
